Rhett's Bluff Nature Area

This conservation easement (September 2010) preserves the Rhett’s Bluff Nature Area, located in the center of Rhett’s Bluff.  The easement, granted by the Kiawah Island Community Association, will preserve the unique freshwater wetland and maritime forest habitat of the property.

This property (2.8 acres) is one of several areas identified as critical bobcat habitat by the Town of Kiawah Island’s “Bobcat Management Guidelines.”  In 2007, a GPS-collared female and kittens were seen several times on the property, suggesting that the property was perhaps being used as a denning area.  With the placement of the conservation easement, this unique habitat will be preserved in perpetuity, thus protecting a potential den area that island bobcats can use into the future.

For property owners and visitors that would like to see the newly preserved area, a paved path and boardwalk bisect the property offering an interesting walk through the middle of the freshwater wetland habitat and adjacent maritime forest.
