77 New Settlement Road
77 New Settlement Road is a platted house lot located to the left as one enter the Rhett’s Bluff Enclave. The lot is uncleared and there are no buildings or other man-made structures on it. It consists of 0.41 acres of high ground, and over 95% of the lot is covered with maritime forest habitat.
The lot is filled with thickets of yaupon holly and wax myrtle intertwined with smilax. The entire area and the forested wetland behind it provide an important sanctuary for wildlife, including deer, bobcat, fox, raccoon and opossum. Signs of this habitation are abundant. A number of birds also inhabit the area, including: Carolina Wren, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Chickadees, Tufted Titmouse, Blue jay and Cardinals.
The most remarkable aspect of this lot is the degree to which it is a key component of the maritime forest cover of the area. There are several large live and laurel oaks on this lot and the canopy of very large live oak from adjacent lots extends this coverage to the entire area.
This property was preserved by the Conservancy in February 2004.
